What is Toenail Fungus?

Nail fungus occurs on a regular basis and usually starts as a yellow or white spot that’s located just under the tip of your toenail. As the infection worsens, the fungus can create discoloration within your nail while also causing the nail to thicken or crumble around the edges. While the fungus may begin around one toenail, it can eventually affect several nails. This condition can range in severity from mild to serious. Severe cases of toenail fungus can cause pain and a variety of other issues that may require you to obtain some other forms of treatment such as laser fungus treatment in Newport Beach.

How Laser Fungus Treatment Works

While toenail fungus can always reappear on your toenails, among the most effective ways to get rid of the current fungus is with laser fungus removal in Newport Beach, which has proven to be very successful. This simple and straightforward treatment makes use of a laser beam which is passed over the infected nails. This is repeated until the laser energy has reached the nail bed. The laser is designed to promote anti-fungal activity by killing the microbe that has caused the fungus to develop in the first place. The procedure itself is nearly pain-free, although many patients do feel a warm sensation during the laser treatment.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

When you make an appointment with your doctor for laser fungus treatment in Newport Beach, you may want to prepare for the appointment first so you can make sure all of your questions are answered. It’s during this initial appointment with your doctor that you’ll want to ask any questions that come to mind.

You’ll want to provide your doctor with a list of your symptoms and any medical history so that they can be certain you’re a good candidate for the treatment. If you’re currently using any medications or have recently been through a major life change, your doctor should have all of this information as well. Before your appointment, make sure any nail polish or nail decorations are removed.

What to Expect During Treatment

The first aspect of any laser fungus treatment involves a thorough evaluation and examination of the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Your affected nails may also be filed down at this time through a process known as “debridement”.

Once the full treatment begins, the laser will be sent directly over the affected nails. It’s possible that the laser will be extended to nails that have yet to develop fungus as a means of stopping any traces of the fungus in its tracks.

A single session of this treatment lasts for about 20 minutes (for 5-10 nails), but varies. However, a single treatment session is not enough to get rid of all of the fungus. The nail will need to grow out again before you are able to determine if the treatment was successful or if additional treatment sessions are needed.

You will need to receive laser treatment every two months for an entire year. It typically takes about one year for a healthy nail to grow. Pictures will be taken to document your healthy nail growth.

Recovery From Laser Fungus Treatment

While a recovery process is typically unnecessary with this laser fungus treatment, you’ll still want to inquire about any recommendations for caring for the affected area once the treatment has been applied. In general, there is no downtime and you can return to regular activities right away.
